An interview with Lucy!: Misaka Mikoto
Interviewed by: TheAce22
Hey fellow interviewer Misaka, thanks for taking the time to do this! Lets start off with the basics. Will you tell us about yourself IRL? Are you still in school? do you have a job? Location? Anything other generic information you are willing to share?
Okay then. I'm seventeen years old and I was born and raised in Cincinnati, Ohio and then I moved to Minnetonka, Minnesota five months ago because of my papa as a manager of his job. I am still in school, as I go to Minnetonka High School for my senior year. It's a pretty high academic school that I enjoy; however, I feel kind of homesick. Ever since I started high school, I been into clubs so I been joining Key Club to get with the community and help around, along with building relationships with my fellow peers and creating a better environment for everyone else. I suppose that is rather my occupation for the time being. I'm also a violinist and a soccer fanatic. I been playing the violin ever since I started middle school, which also means I'm in orchestra as well. As for soccer I been playing ever since I was eight years old. I have a huge passion for soccer and the sport really meets my expectations. I love the feel of the ball, meeting tough opponents / rivals, going to other schools away from our home game, competing in tournaments, and getting to know my teammates and coaches. I'd say that's the sport I get my determination from. I also love to cook food, as I always watched papa and mama and learned from them. I love to experiment with food and try to use certain flavors to create a different kind of dish that I've never tried. I'm half Mexican from papa's side and half Caucasian (a much fancy and appropriate term for white) from mama. I'll also add that I'm a handheld gamer so I love playing the Nintendo 3DS and I been thinking about getting a PS Vita as well. My favorite genre are Fighting games. Of course I'm a huge fan of Pokemon and I been playing it since Gen 3 of Fire Red / Leaf Green.
Aye, I was also born in Ohio! With soccer what position do you like to play, and which one do you think is your best. Do you watch much professinal soccer on TV or attend games regulary, if so which is your favorite team.
Nice! I only know one other person that lives in Ohio from here! My position in soccer is a Left Wing and that's a wide midfielder in other words. They have to be excellent dribblers, have accurate passes, and they have to be fast as well. They have to be good at reading midfielders and attackers when the ball is being passed. It really takes a lot of your energy so you have to be fit for it. I watch a lot of professional soccer when I have the time to on TV. I did go to the 2014 Brazilian Cup last year with my family and that's one of the greatest and most outstanding experiences that I can ever think of. My favorite team in the United States are the Vancouver Whitecaps.
As for...global wise, I don't have a favorite team.
Cool, since you said you have been playing since fire red/leaf green you have probably played all of the games up to ORAS.(I assume) What was the most challenging of the Pokemon DS games you have every played and which one did you enjoy the most?
That is correct (with the exception of the Kalos region of X and Y that I have yet to play because my 3DS broke during that time), pretty much the ones that are RPG games. I'll say I've actually had more of a challenge / trouble in the older games than I do on the DS like Yellow and such because I played them on an emulator. For the challenging parts on the DS games, my most memorable are Volkner, Cynthia, and Elesa because I didn't have the right Pokemon against them and I was too lazy to even catch other Pokemon to have the upper hand. Cynthia ended up taking a lot of my time in beating the game. Volkner was just plain annoying and Elesa was so much worse because of those Emolgas, static ability, and the idiotic Volt Switch. I'll say I enjoyed ORAS the most because for the most part, it's similar to Ruby and Sapphire and Gen 3 is my second favorite. I love how much it brought back memories. I played Ruby on the emulator so I decided to get Alpha Sapphire and I knew what to expect playing the game. Norman will always give me a run for my money because his Slaking was a powerhouse.
Well Misaka, heres your chance to brag! Tell us something you feel is awesome about yourself
I'd say that I'm left handed. Usually I see many people do a lot with their right hand or right leg but I'm the total opposite. I guess my biggest thing that I feel awesome about is being able treat people's injuries and my knowledge in anatomy, the study of the human body. I have a first aid kit in case someone gets hurt, it makes me say that I'm really planning on becoming a doctor when I grow up, but I'd need to get through nursing first and that's no easy task.
Well, onto Pokemon Questions!
How did you get into PS originally.
How did you get into Smogon?
Why did you choose Monotype?
Originally, I started in 2013 on PS around...June or July if I recall correctly. I was in the school library doing a report in biology until I saw someone in front of me on some website playing against another person. I grew curious and walked up to him asking about the site he was on. He told me to go on Pokemon Showdown and check it out, which I did and I enjoyed it!
For Smogon, I lurked around a bit before I joined. During the time when Community Mentoring was still a room on PS. Unfixable introduced me and showed me around the site to which I grew interested in. From that point on, I been doing work for the Community Mentoring room and then I grew into asking Smogon-related questions, being in the Battle Spot / Other Metas forums, and contributing to Pokemon analyses.
I chose Monotype because I was pretty sick and tired of playing tiers. I started making Monotype teams and use them on the ladder, which helped to some extent. Then I decided to move towards playing the OM and I begin to really enjoy myself in playing this metagame and ended up growing attached to it. Soon after, I joined the room.
Whats your favorite Pokemon/Type/Pokemon on favorite type?
My favorite Pokemon is between Skarmory or Cobalion. I love Skarmory more because it was such a struggle to get it. I use Skarmory on all my teams that I created In-Game. That steel bird was also beautiful to look at in the anime when I saw it. My favorite type is Steel because they have many resistances and it takes a lot to break through Steel-types as many have incredible defense. Some can use that to their advantage and set up with boosting moves or stall while replenishing their health.
Alright, on to user submitted questions!
Azelea asks what is your favorite type of music?
To be honest, I don't have a favorite type of music. I'd listen to any type of music except country, because it kind of sounds depressing to me.
Stuns ask why did you change your name from Lucina?
I changed my name from Lucina09 because I was told the name "Lucina" was still taken, I didn't want numbers in my name, and I didn't feel like waiting for six months for whenever the account becomes inactive. The same thing went for "Misaka." I changed to "Misaka Mikoto" because she's one of those types of characters in an anime that I really felt sorry and she was the type of person to go through a huge character development from not accepting her sisters to her accepting them in the end, "Wow she went through so much with her younger sister clones in saving them and almost killing herself as a cost." I can go deep but I'll just stop there. To me it's like family and not much of that happens in the anime that centers around it.
What is it like being able to be a driver in one of the biggest rooms on the main server?
I say it's no different than being one in much bigger rooms because you hold the same responsibilities such has keeping the room on topic, protecting it from any toxic users, and contributing to chat more. I do say when it comes to looking for potential users, you'd have to watch a little more closely compared to much smaller rooms. I don't really have much to say about it except it feels nice in a way.
Betathunder asks what is your worst fear
Falling from high places. It does fit heights category but I'm not afraid of riding roller coasters, being in airplanes, and such. Just that when I don't have any surface under me and nothing but air pummeling to the ground, that's a scary feeling.
Who is your favorite voice if u have one?
My favorite voice was originally ArkenCiel before he became room driver. I kind of saw him as a bit of a mentor to me because he helped me with my Steel-type team months ago. He has great knowledge of the metagame, always willing to help, great person indeed. Him and I sometimes joke around a little here and there. Now I just cheer for him on in his future Mono battles. But as of right now, I don't have a favorite voice. They're all amazing in contributing to the room, fun, enjoyable to be around, helpful, always willing to make Monotype better to the best of their abilities. I love all of them!
Azelea asks for some anime suggestions
Oh god...there is a lot of anime I watched and others that are soon to be watched. I think I'll make a myanimelist account and put a list down for Azelea. I'm the type that loves action anime but sometimes I like to watch some peaceful anime. I can give you some such as...Kekkai Sensen, Gintama, Cowboy Bebop, Index/Railgun, Durarara, Noragami, Psycho Pass, Haikyuu, Kuroko No Basuke, Your Lie in April and much much more. Just some for now.
If there is anything you could change in the Monotype Metagame what would it be?
Nothing really. The only thing I was upset about Monotype was the Mega Metagross ban. I got over that months ago though. The metagame is very stabled and fine for my standards.
Whos ur bae misaka .3.
Oh gosh, I better not see a ship sail in the Monotype room but I'd say my bae (don't get the wrong idea) is Acast. Him and I both have a nice interest in anime and we share our opinions and recommend things to each other. We both enjoy Gen 5 Monotype. He also helped me a lot along the way in building a Mono Normal team to which I really enjoy using now. I see him as a close friend to me. We've been planning a project (it isn't anything new really) but have only started (depending on how our lives go outside if we have the time to) but I can't tell what it is. I remember I used to try and impress him months ago with an interesting Steel-type team, which fell flat on its face. He's overall a great and cool person to be around and I enjoy him.
Well before we end off, any words of wisdom or sages of advice for aspiring Monotypers?
Some wisdom / advice I'd like to give is to always keep a positive attitude and have that determined mindset. When you have that and set goals for whatever task you want to achieve, it makes you try harder. Whenever you're angry or upset about losing a game or even haxed, make sure you keep your cool and maybe take a little bit of time from battling to get your mind back on track. Also, continue playing, coming up with impressive sets / gimmicks, and explore the elegant surprises in which Monotype holds behind closed doors.
